When helping a leadership
team generate their strategy, we begin with
the "what."
We facilitate a process in which the leadership
team articulates a Strategic Vision for
the organization. The strategic vision captures
the organization's ambitions for the distinct
value it will provide (to customers, shareholders
and employees), its levels of performance,
and the kind of culture it wants. The team
then articulates clear and measurable Strategic
Promises that define the results that must
be achieved to declare success. Our rigorous
process generates a strategy - both vision
and promises - that represents a breakthrough
for the organization. And we facilitate
the strategy development process in a way
that it creates total team alignment - not
merely consensus -- along with a great deal
of enthusiasm, energy and passion for success.
We then help the leadership team establish
the "how" - the initiatives, plans, milestones
and accountabilities that make the "what"
happen.
Sometimes our clients bring in strategy
or operational consultants to help them
with the "content" of their strategy, to
provide industry, functional or other knowledge
that they lack. This is quite understandable
and often very necessary. However, the leadership
team must own the strategy completely and
ensure that it does not become the "X Consulting
Group's strategy," even if the consultant
has supplied much of the content.
